The data came from the extensive analysis we conducted of all Starbucks locations in the US, focusing on their review counts and ratings to gather valuable insights.

There are 16,482 Starbucks stores in the US, including territories, and 21,655 outside the country, a total of 38,137 worldwide.

The healthiest Starbucks drinks with no sugar, calories, and fat are Chai Tea, Earl Grey Tea, Emperor’s Clouds & Mist, and Iced Black Tea [28].

Exactly how many Starbucks locations are there? Current data shows there are 16,482 Starbucks stores scattered all over the US and its territories.
The majority of Starbucks stores are found in the West, with 6,156 locations. This region makes up 37.4% of the brand’s total number. However, it should be noted that they’re mostly concentrated in highly urbanized states like California.
On the other hand, the Northeast Region has the fewest number of Starbucks stores. It makes up only 12.5% of the total number, with 2,053 stores. Again, most stores are located in states with high population densities, like New York and Pennsylvania. These two states alone already make up 55.9% of the total Starbucks stores in this region.

The largest Starbucks in the world — the Starbucks Reserve Roastery Chicago is located at — 646 Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA. It’s a huge five-story building that covers a 35,000-square-foot area, its size equivalent to almost two-thirds of a football field [60].
California has the most number of Starbucks stores, with 3,115 locations. The state makes up 18.9% of all Starbucks stores in the country.
There are literally so many Starbucks in California that they outnumber the state’s 1,299 high schools. For each high school, there are 2.4 Starbucks. Even if we combine the state’s middle and high schools (2,562), Starbucks still outnumbers them by 1.2 times [5].

The combined numbers of these five cities are 1.3 times more than the combined numbers of the states with the lowest Starbucks stores. These are Vermont (12), North Dakota (22), Maine (27), Wyoming (29), Rhode Island (33), South Dakota (42), Delaware (43), New Hampshire (43), West Virginia (47), Montana (50), and Mississippi (50). exas and Florida come in second and third places with 1,403 (8.5%) and 893 (5.4%), respectively.
California is home to 18.9% (3,115) of Starbucks stores. The state has so many Starbucks that the brand outnumbers its middle and high schools by 1.2 times. On the other hand, Vermont has the least only 12 locations.

With 39 million Californians, 30.5 million Texans, and 22.6 million Floridians [44]. Starbucks has saturated these states’ markets; there’s literally one Starbucks for every 12,509 Californians, 21,741 Texans, and 25,320 Floridians.
These states are also highly urbanized
They attract more businesses, tourists, and people with diverse cultures and lifestyles than rural states.
Naturally, big brands like Starbucks will gravitate more toward these urban states.
The bustling New York City has the highest number of Starbucks with 191 stores. It actually has 16 times more Starbucks than the entire state of Vermont. The City That Never Sleeps, indeed, needs its coffee.
Chicago comes in second place with 186 stores. One of its stores is actually the biggest on the planet and a top-rated one at that. But more on this later.
Coffee also fuels the Sin City. With 179 stores, Las Vegas, Nevada lands third place. The Neon City makes up 60.9% of the state’s 294 Starbucks stores. It is, after all, a major tourism hub that attracts millions of tourists, both locals and foreigners.

Vermont has only 12 Starbucks. Making up 0.07% of the total, it’s the state with the least number of Starbucks. North Dakota lands second place with 22 stores (0.13%), and Maine at third place with 27 stores (0.16%).
Again, population density plays a huge factor. The lower the population density, the smaller the market size and the lower the potential sales volume. Vermont’s population is 60.2 times smaller than California, with only 647,464 Vermonters. Compared to California, there’s one Starbucks for every 53,955 Vermonters. North Dakota also has a small population of only 783,926 or one Starbucks store for every 35,633.
Geographic challenges also play a role. Most states with the fewest Starbucks may be considered rural, with large areas of undeveloped land and considerable distances from major urban centers.
Maine, with a population of 1.4 million, is the most rural of US states, with 50% of its land undeveloped and uninhabited [18]. With only 27 Starbucks, there’s one for every 51,693 people.
Urban or rural, Starbucks is, without a doubt, the leading coffeehouse chain in the US, with a foot in all 50 states.
Every state has a Starbucks. However, (aside from Puerto Rico, with 33 Starbucks locations), all major US territories have none. You won't find Starbucks in American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, or the US Virgin Islands.
The same factors mentioned earlier could also explain why these territories have no Starbucks. Population densities, supply chain logistics, as well as stringent laws and regulations may have all played a role in the decision to stay out.
Americans are happy with Starbucks, giving it an ACSI score of 78 in 2023. This is actually up 1 point from the previous year’s 77 [40]. The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) measures how satisfied Americans are with a particular product or service, with 100 being the best and highest possible score.
Between 2006 and 2023, Starbucks’ score ranged anywhere from a low of 74 to a high of 80. averaged around 77 in the 18-year period. Starbucks had the lowest ACSI score in 2015, with 74. It dropped six points from its highest ACSI of 80 in 2013 [40].

The overall fast food industry was then experiencing a widespread decline in customer satisfaction.
Improved customer products/services by competitors
Dunkin’, one of Starbucks' biggest competitors, stepped up its game. In the same year (2015), Dunkin's ACSI score of 78 surpassed Starbucks’ 74.
Performance of individual Starbucks locations
Stores that performed poorly pulled down the brand’s overall ACSI score.
By 2016, Starbucks’ yearly ACSI score gradually improved, peaking at 79 in 2019 and 2021. It dropped to 77 in 2022 before gaining a point in 2023 at 78 [40].

Starbucks has an overall average rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars. This comes from our gathered data of 5.3 million reviews across 11,549 stores, each having more than 100 reviews. These suggest that Starbucks, when it comes to customer satisfaction, offers pretty consistent quality of service and products.

More than 4 in 5 of the customers’ feedback (83% or 4.4 million reviews) say Starbucks is awesome and gave it a high satisfaction rating of 4 to 4.9.
Only 1.3% or 71,473 reviews show dissatisfaction with Starbucks’ products and/or its services, giving the brand a low rating between 1.8 and 3.4 stars.
In general, there are 62 times more satisfied Starbucks customers than dissatisfied ones.
Less than 1 in 6 of the reviews remain neutral, with ratings playing between 3.5 and 3.9 stars. They make up 15.6% or 833,620 of the reviews.
83% of the reviews show a high level of satisfaction with Starbucks versus 1.3% who were dissatisfied.
As of this writing (June 2024), Starbucks has a total of 5.6 million reviews gathered from 16,475 US Starbucks stores. Of the 16,475 locations, 120 stores have no reviews and ratings, leaving us with only 16,355 stores to analyze.
About 105 stores received the highest rating of 5 stars from 319 reviews. On the other hand, 14 stores received the lowest rating of 1 star from 21 reviews. It should be noted, though that these stores received less than 100 reviews, some having even only one review.
To ensure the accuracy of our analysis, especially considering the outliers, we limited our data to locations with at least 100 reviews or higher. One hundred reviews are substantial enough to identify trends and gather significant insights.
This being said, limiting the data to stores with at least 100 reviews gave us 11,549 locations (including the District of Columbia) to analyze. These stores, in total, represent 70.2% of all US locations.
Customers may be pretty happy with Starbucks, but only 190 locations actually received high ratings of 4.5 to 4.9 out of 5 stars. These stores make up 1.65% of the 11,549 stores with over 100 reviews that we analyzed.
Of the 190 stores, only one location received the highest rating of 4.9. This Starbucks is located at the Star Frisco Station (4343 Frisco Green Ave., Frisco) with 248 reviews.
The majority of stores (151 locations or 79.5%) received 4.5 ratings. Again, California Starbucks stores make up 20% of the 190 locations, with 35 locations receiving 4.5 stars.
Analyzing only 11,549 Starbucks (stores with ≥100 reviews) for accuracy, we found that most stores (2,580 or 22.3%) have a rating of 4.2, while only one location got the highest rate of 4.9.
Around 268 Starbucks stores received low ratings of 1.8 to 3.4 stars, and about 10% (26) of them are in Texas. These low-rated stores make up 2.3% of the 11,549 Starbucks with over 100 reviews that we analyzed. Five of these Starbucks stores are actually located in airport terminals and received the lowest ratings of 1.8 to 1.9. The majority (76 outlets) received a 3.3 rating.
It’s surprising to note that California, which has the most Starbucks at 3,115, has only 10 stores with the lowest ratings. What’s not surprising is that most of them are also situated inside airports.
Out of all the Starbucks stores, Seattle’s Starbucks Reserve Roastery (1124 Pike St, Seattle, WA, 98101) has the highest number of reviews at 15,948, with an average rating of 4.6 stars.
Of those we included in the analysis (11,549 stores), 33 of them have exactly a hundred reviews each. If we include all stores, regardless of the review count, 57 locations received only one review.
Starbucks stores vary greatly in the number of reviews and ratings, with 11,549 stores to analyze. To ensure accuracy and give equal importance to their ratings and review counts, we used a ranking system and assigned equal weights to both. With that said, our data shows that most of the worst 20 Starbucks are found in Ohio (4 stores), California (3 stores), and Texas (2 stores).

Texas State University’s Alkek Library and Student Center, both located at 601 University Drive, San Marcos, TX, 78666, have 3.2 ratings and 100 reviews each.

However, if we consider only the ratings, then the worst Starbucks stores are located at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport with the address of 1 Terminal Drive, Kenner, Louisiana.

Another Starbucks outlet with the lowest rating of 1.8 out of 125 reviews can also be found at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. This is the DCA Terminal 2 Gate B22 with an address at 2401 Smith Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia.
The Starbucks outlet with the second lowest rating of 1.9 out of 111 reviews is found at the Newark Liberty International Airport, specifically EWR PRE-SECURITY Term C Bag Cl (Terminal C, Space B-50, Newark, New Jersey).
The third lowest rating among Starbucks stores is 2 stars (176 reviews), and this goes to RSW Concourse C Gate C7. This outlet can be found at the Southwest Florida International Airport with the address of 11000 Terminal Access Rd, Fort Myers, Florida.
The best Starbucks store is located in its home state, Washington — Starbucks Reserve Roastery Seattle at 1124 Pike St, Seattle, WA, 98101. The store has an average rating of 4.6 from 15,948 reviews.
This fancier version of Starbucks serves rare and unique coffees as well as artisanal breads and pastries. Some customers say this Reserve offers a whole new experience of enjoying coffee.

The country’s third Starbucks Reserve — New York Roastery, 61 9th Ave., New York, NY, 10011 — landed fifth place with 4,479 reviews and an average rating of 4.3.
The best and most reviewed Starbucks is Seattle’s Starbucks Reserve. Of the top 30 best locations, 9 are in Oregon and 6 in Georgia
From the 11,549 Starbucks locations and 5.3 million reviews that we analyzed, Floridians are the most active Starbucks customers, with 80.7% of Florida’s 893 locations having received at least 100 reviews. New Mexico follows, with 80.6% of its 103 locations receiving over 100 reviews. Only 73.9% of California’s 3,115 locations received more than 100 reviews. Starbucks customers in Alaska are the least active in dropping reviews. Out of its 52 locations, only 23.1% received over 100 reviews.
But when you consider all reviews and all locations, California has the highest number with 1.1 million reviews, making up 20.3% of the total number of reviews (5.6 million). Texas and Florida follow with 581,552 and 417,979 reviews, respectively. Even when combined, these two big states still make up less than all of California’s reviews.
It’s also not surprising to see that Vermont, the state with the least number of Starbucks, also has the lowest total number of reviews, with only 2,108 for its 12 locations.
Florida has the most active Starbucks customers when it comes to leaving reviews. At least 80.7% of the state’s 893 Starbucks have ≥ 100 reivews. Alaskans are the least active, less than 1/4 of its total stores received ≥100 reviews

Starbucks showed rapid expansion and rise in popularity after having gone public in 1992. The mid-1990s to 2007, in particular, were marked by the opening of one US store after another.
The very first Starbucks store opened in 1971 in Seattle. Twenty years later, the brand breached its hundredth outlet in 1991. Expansion boomed after the company went public in 1992 [29]. In almost half a decade, the company breached its thousandth outlet in 1996 [20].
By 1999, the number of Starbucks in the US nearly doubled, with about 1,979 stores scattered across the country. Over the next 10 years, this number surged by 462.3%, with a total of 11,128 locations in the US in 2009 [26].
However, the growth in the number of US Starbucks slowed down considerably in the next decade. Increasing by only about 35.2%, the total reached 15,041 stores by 2019.
Growth remained slow halfway into the following decade. From 2019 to 2024, we only see 1,441 new stores, a 9.6% increase to a total of 16,482 Starbucks in the US. The number of new US stores may have declined, but the giant coffeehouse chain has set its sights on conquering the international coffee scene.
In half a decade, Starbucks grew from a single store in Seattle, WA to 16,482 locations across the country, dominating the coffeehouse chain industry. The number of new stores grew rapidly after the company went public in 1992 and peaked in 2007.
While Starbucks is still committed to investing domestically, it also aims to strengthen its global presence. Currently, there are 20,228 Starbucks stores outside the country. By 2030, the brand plans to expand to 55,000 stores. This translates to eight new stores per day [42].

Starbucks got its name from Herman Melville’s book called “Moby-Dick” and is, in a way, the company’s nod to the early coffee trading industry.
Written in 1851, the book is about Captain Ahab’s obsession to take revenge on Moby Dick, a white sperm whale that bit off the captain’s leg during a whaling expedition. Starbuck (without an s) is the captain’s first mate.
The Starbucks logo was created in 1971 by Terry Heckler and has been changed three times since then [59]. The logo shows a siren (mermaid) with twin tails, staying true to its nautical-themed name. Just like the name pays homage to the early coffee trading history, the siren also ties the brand to the seafaring world.

Starbucks was founded in 1971 and opened its first door to the public at Pike Place Market, Seattle, Washington. They initially provided coffee to other establishments, such as espresso bars and restaurants. It was only in the mid-1980s that Starbucks began serving its own coffee beverages using its own coffee beans [20].
Starbucks was founded by three friends: Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker. Baldwin and Siegl were teachers, while Bowker was a writer [21].
Starbucks was created for the very simple reason that they wanted Seattle to have its own place for good, dark-roast coffee. What started as a $10,000 investment grew to a billion-dollar giant coffee brand [21].
Starbucks launched in 1971 and has been providing good beverages and excellent customer service for 53 years.
In 1980, Siegl sold his shares to his partners, and in 1987, Baldwin and Bowker sold Starbucks to Howard Schultz and his group of investors [49].

Depending on the type of Starbucks drink, a single cup can easily put you over your added sugar limit.

Starbucks sells the most coffee in the US. Based on the number of locations, Starbucks alone makes up 52% of the top 10 largest coffeehouse chains in the country , while Dunkin' makes up 30.3% . Including Panera Bread, the three brands combined already dominate the market and makeup 89.2% of the top 10.
Dunkin' is older than Starbucks by 23 years . The former first opened in 1948, while the latter in 1971. However, Starbucks quickly outpaced Dunkin' not only in the number of locations but also in sales. Today, there are roughly 1.7 times more Starbucks locations (16,482) than Dunkin’ (9,623) in the US. Most Starbucks stores remain open on Labor Day . However, some stores may also choose to close on that day. If you have plans to grab a Starbucks drink, be sure to check your local store’s schedule and store hours.
Some Starbucks locations do remain open on New Year’s Day , but the company allows its stores some flexibility in policies, including schedules. As such, some stores may choose to close or at least reduce their operating hours on that day. Again, check with your local Starbucks for its holiday schedules.
It depends on your local Starbucks . The company gives its stores some flexibility, so some stores can choose to open, close, or operate on reduced hours on the 4th of July. We suggest checking your local store’s holiday schedule to be sure.
Technically, you can’t franchise a Starbucks store as all stores are company-owned. However, you can apply for a licensed store, which will cost you around $315,000 . In addition to this, you also need to have at least $700,000 in liquid assets for other expenses — from compliance fees and inventory and supplies to marketing and promotions [48].
Starbucks has been at the center of many controversies, from the Starbucks boycott in 2024 and walkouts to allegations of unfair practices. In this section, we’ll try to answer some of them and other Starbucks-related questions as well.
Starbucks has been involved in many social issues, resulting in calls for boycotts. The most recent Starbucks boycott in 2024 was when the brand got indirectly involved in a tweet about the Israel-Gaza war . Starbucks Workers United released a tweet supporting Palestine and that tweet has the company logo. This made customers assume that Starbucks supported Palestine, which then also led pro-Israel customers to harass Starbucks employees online and offline.
Starbucks asked the Workers United to take down the post and stop using the brand’s logo, but the latter refused. This led Starbucks to file a lawsuit against the Workers United, which again caused customers to think that the brand was supporting Israel.
While the issue was going on, Alshaya Group, a Starbucks franchise operator in the Middle East and North Africa region, announced that it was going to lay off 2,000 employees. The calls to boycott Starbucks’ “links” to the Israel-Gaza war affected their sales.
Starbucks supports neither . The company has never officially declared any support for either Israel or Gaza nor has the brand contributed to any military efforts [27].
In addition to the boycotts, Starbucks employees were also on strike during one of the company’s busiest and highest-sales days, the Red Cup Day, which was dubbed as the Red Cup Rebellion [3]. Employees were demanding better wages and benefits, especially since they were contributing significantly to the company’s profits.
Starbucks is not supporting genocide in any way or manner . In an official statement, Starbucks categorically condemned any act of terrorism, violence, and hate. The brand has also distanced itself from Workers United’s stance on the Israel-Gaza war, stating that any action or statement released by Workers United is theirs alone [24].
Starbucks filed a lawsuit against the Workers United, citing trademark infringement as the reason . The Workers United’s unauthorized use of Starbucks’ logo in its tweet caused confusion and hatred toward the employees [24].
Starbucks’ market value lost around $12 billion in November 2023 . Many factors may have contributed to the loss, such as harder financial times. However, some speculations say that the boycotts over the war may have caused the brand some significant financial damage [43].
