Whole Coffee Beans FAQs

To preserve optimal freshness and flavor, store Cafely’s whole coffee beans in the resealable container they arrive in. Keep in a cool, dark, dry location.

Whole coffee beans offer several advantages over ground coffee. First, they preserve their freshness and flavors longer than ground coffee. Second, they allow you to choose the ideal grind depending on the brewing system of your choice.

The ideal grind size depends on the brewing system you’re using.

For phin filters, moka pots, or AeroPress, choose a fine grind setting (similar consistency to table salt).

For pour-over systems (including Chemex and Hario V60), drip coffeemakers, and vacuum pots, use a medium or medium-coarse grind (similar consistency to sugar).

For French press or cold brew coffee, use a coarse grind setting (similar consistency to sea salt).

When stored properly, our whole coffee beans will remain optimal for around 1 month before slowly starting to degrade. They will maintain more than 80% of the original taste for up to 6 months.

You can freeze your coffee to preserve it's freshness longer — however, there are some caveats. Freezing coffee will affect the flavor slightly, but allows you to keep your coffee for 1–2 years with minimal degradation of flavor. Only store unopened packages of coffee to prevent freezer-burn. If already opened, move your coffee beans to an airtight container before storing them in the freezer.

We recommend using a burr-style grinder to ensure a consistent grind. Blade-style grinders or a simple blender will work, too, but aren't as consistent or effective.

Cafely offers a variety of specialty coffee in whole bean form. Take our coffee quiz to decide which beans are best for you.
