Ground Coffee FAQs

To preserve the freshness of your ground coffee for as long as possible, we recommend keeping it in the resealable package it arrives in. Store in a cool, dark, dry location, and make sure the seal is tightly closed after each use. For optimal shelf-life, squeeze excess air out of the package before sealing.

All our coffee is ground using a fine setting — similar to table salt. This is the ideal grind for brewing Vietnamese-style coffee with our phin filter. It also works great for AeroPress, moka pots, and espresso machines.

Ground coffee begins to lose freshness almost immediately after grinding. For the best taste, use it within 1 month. However, if stored properly, our coffee will remain delicious for up to 6 months.

Yes, ground coffee will remain fresh longer if stored in the fridge. The only caveat is that only unopened bags are safe from the effects of freezer burn. If the package has already been opened, it's best to transfer your coffee in an airtight container before storing it in the freezer.

Bitterness usually results from over-extraction, which can happen if the coffee remains in contact with hot water for too long. Certain brewing methods may produce overly bitter flavors using our fine-ground coffee — such as the French press and pour-over methods like the Hario V60 and Chemex. For these types of coffee brewing systems we recommend ordering our whole coffee beans instead and grinding to a medium or medium-coarse grind setting.

We do not recommend reusing ground coffee. All of the great flavors and oils are extracted during the first brew, leaving behind only the acidic and bitter components for the second brew. You can, however, give your spent coffee grounds a second life as a shower scrub or fertilizer for plants.

No, the grinding process has no impact on caffeine levels. However, it can affect extraction efficiency. Fine-grind coffee produces a strong coffee in a short period of time. Coarser grinds brew more slowly and produce a weaker coffee if brewed under the same conditions.
